Brayton Energy has been awarded an important project with the US DOE, to improve the economics and life of a critical component in thermal salt transports systems. The Rotary Salt Coupler is the interface between the stationary salt reservoir and the tracking solar concentrator. Historically this component is subject to leakage failures, creating safety risks as well as economic impact on the solar plant. Brayton’s design also extends the operating temperature range of conventional carbonate and nitrate salts. The innovative design, to be tested at Brayton, will operate with modern thermal storage media, ranging from 500 to 700 C.
